# What does the 2027 EPR scheme for commercial packaging (EPRO) change for sorting in businesses?

## Short answer

From 1 January 2027, all commercial packaging falls under an EPR (extended producer responsibility) scheme: every producer concerned must have joined a producer responsibility organisation. Since March 2024 the scheme has already covered food-service packaging. Among its objectives, ADEME cites developing source separation through financial support for the collection and treatment of end users' waste, meaning businesses that sort.

## For a business that sorts
The scheme aims to reduce packaging waste, develop reuse, fund the collection and treatment of waste sorted by end users, and increase recycling. To benefit, packaging must be sorted at source: containers labelled by stream on site remain the first step. See sorting obligations for businesses.
